Eureka is the main city of an isolated urban area of about 80,000 people, the seat of the Redwood Empire. It sits beside Humbolt Bay, the largest deep water port between San Francisco and Coos Bay. While it is noted for its Victorian architecture and 19th century downtown, we were there mainly for the redwoods — it's the closest population center to Redwood National Park, 45 miles to its north. |

Humbolt BayUp to a million years or so ago this large bay (24 square miles) was scoured by three rivers. Since then, however, two of these rivers have meandered off elsewhere, leading Humbolt Bay prone to silt and sand bars. A national wildlife refuge and a local park protect some of the marshy lands on its south edge. |

The Lost CoastThe village of Ferndale, twenty miles south of Eureka, marks the northern end of California's Lost Coast, the most remote stretch of the Pacific coastline in the lower 48. It's a hundred miles of mountains and cliffs, with a geology so crumbly that no highways cross it and only a few back roads enter it. Here are a few pictures of the Ferndale end. |
