This chapter covers a 35 mile length of Oregon's Pacific Coast, stretching from Lincoln City in the north to Waldport in the south, and centered on the prosperous town of Newport. This coast is mainly beach, with good access from a number of state recreation areas as well as a fair number of beach settlements. There are also several good sets of cliffs: the small but scenic Seal Rock cliffs half way between Waldport and Newport; Yaquina Head virtually in Newport with its attractive cliff-top lighthouse; and the three mile stretch of cliffs at Otter Rock north of Newport, with a string of state viewpoints.
The town of Newport, at the center of this stretch, is large by coastal standards, with more than 10,000 people. The docks are noted for their colony of California seals that loll about on a warm day soaking up the sun. You'll also find the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's base for research vessels, with 110 marine officers. With such a major marine reseach operation, Newport has more than its share of ocean oriented museums: the Hatfield Marine Science Center, the Oregon State Aquarium, and the Pacific Maritime Heritage Center. You'll find that Newport has a handsome old downtown, the home of locally popular Rogue Ales.
This webpage covers an area between Cape Perpetua and Pacific City.
